Sun Tzu was a Chinese general, writer, military strategist, and philosopher who wrote The Art of War. In the book, he states that in battle one must be as "swift as the wind, silent as a forest, fierce as fire, and immovable as a mountain" - describing the flexibility, grit, and drive needed to be successful. This famous phrase was incorporated onto a battle flag during the Sengoku period of feudal Japan by Takeda Shingen, a distinguished daimyō, to rally his samurai in tough battles. In it Takeda Shingen used the four kanji for wind, forest, fire, and mountain to symbolize Sun Tzu's teachings:
風林火山 ~ Fūrinkazan
